A Brief History of the 4th of July
The United States celebrates the 4th of July every year, and it is important that you know why this date and national holiday is so important to our nation. Think about someone older than you like a big sister or brother, and they kept telling you what to do all of the time... plus they kept taking more and more of your weekly allowance. That is similar to what the colonists were dealing with. Great Britain was big brother. Great Britain kept making more rules and new, higher taxes. The colonists started getting fed up with Great Britain and they began organizing so that they could make their own government. There was war in 1776 with decisive battles fought and won, and in the end we told Great Britain that we were independent and would make our rules and treat everyone with equality. So you see, the 4th of July is a lot more than just fancy fireworks!
