The History of Mother's Day:
In America in 1872, Julia Ward Howe suggested a Mother's Day. However, it did not become a national holiday until Anna M. Jarvis began a successful letter writing campaign.  Anna whose own mother had died, missed her very much and felt children should appreciate their mother's while they are still alive. The first Mother's Day was celebrated in 1907 in West Virginia, Anna's home town on the anniversary of Anna's mother's death, the second Sunday in May.  By 1911, every state had celebrated Mother's Day.
MOTHER'S DAY POEM:
M...is for the million things she gave me,
O...means only that she's growing old
T...is for the tears she shed to save me
H...is for her heart of purest gold.
E...is for her eyes, with love-light shining
R....means right, and right she'll always be.
Put them together and they spell mother, a word that means the world to me.
Howard Johnson (1915)

How to Celebrate Mother's Day.  What Families Can do for their Mothers:
One the best way to celebrate Mother's Day is to give your mom the day off. Let her take it easy and relax while the rest of the family does the work.
M
any families begin Mother's Day with breakfast in bed. Usually Dad and the Kids will let mom sleep late as they go into the kitchen and prepare her favorite meal. A Mother's Day breakfast can consist of anything your mom likes.
A
fter the food is cooked arrange everything nicely on a tray. Don't forget the vase with a single flower. With spring here, the children can pick a tulip or daffodil from the garden outside. When everything is ready carefully carry the tray and mom's favorite sections from the newspaper up to her bedroom. Cards and small presents from the children can be placed on the tray before it is presented to mom in bed.
M
any Families make a special Mother's Day dinner or take mom out to her favorite restaurant for a meal. It is a good day to let your mom relax and let her see what a wonderful family she has.

Gift Ideas Article for Mothers Day
Sunday May 9th (US)

Moms tend to love anything you give them. Your their kiddo. You use to give her half fallen over ceramic pots painted in every color under the sun and she still treasures them...how many decades later... A piece of cake. Moms enjoy so many things that you just have to be a little intuitive about things she would buy for herself. Mother in laws...play it very safe...here is a good rule, if  you and your Mother in Law are not close you are not the one to buy the gift for her. Your spouse is suppose to. You can help him or her but Mom needs to know her child did the picking.

You can always give the classic staples. Flowers, perfume, candy. You may want to give this in addition to another gift. Presents are fun to open and mom is no exception when it comes to liking opening gifts on any occasion.

Mom will appreciate the thought you give to a gift more than anyone else. And she will usually tell you what she would like. Listen. If she is being conservative in what she asks for, probe, ask questions, see what she really could use. If she needs a new washing machine and you can afford it, get it for her and give her a little personal gift too. You are one of the few people who can give her a special big gift. But always keep in mind if you don't have the budget, she doesn't expect you to get her anything big. Moms will understand better than anyone if you can't afford an expensive gift and they will feel bad if you spend  more than you can afford.

How to find the perfect gift for you mother.

Look at the colors she wears. These are excellent clues what colors she feels comfortable living around.
See if she is currently collecting anything special. Many women collect collectibles, themes such as angels, cats,...
Does she have an upcoming event that she could use some special item to complete her dinner table.
Does she enjoy jewelry. A very popular Mothers Day gift is boy and girl charms in the birthstone of her children and grandchildren.
Does she have any hobbies she enjoys. Sewing, Movies, Travel.
If she is into home decorating give her either something for the house or a gift certificate to her favorite home decor store. You should go with her at least preliminarily to help her select. Big decorative home decor purchases are best left to her personally making the selection. A picture of you (and you family) in a nice frame always makes a great gift for a mom. Particularly a picture of you and her together.
You can always show her you appreciate her by giving a gift that pampers her.

One of the best things you can do for your mother is share your time and interests with her. She mostly want to know about you. How you are doing. Emotionally, physically, financially. Share information and interests in your life. If  you are into going to plays, take her to one. One you enjoy and you think she might enjoy. She maybe more flexible and open to learning  than you might think.
